Holidays

   There many different holidays around the world, they are dates in which people celebrate important dates. Some of them are different from each other, for example Halloween in USA is celebrated different than in Costa Rica, we have the "Mascarada" in that date. However, Christmas is celebrated in the same way in Costa Rica and USA.

   Some of the celebrations that we can find in Costa Rica and USA are:

Jan. 1st: New year's day. (Both)
This day is full of parties, you can spend time with your family or friends. At midnight you can see fireworks, it does not matter in which country you are.


Jan. 16th: Martin Luther King Jr. Day. (USA) 
It is seen as a day to promote equal rights for all Americans, regardless of their background. Some educational establishments mark the day by teaching their pupils or students about the work of Martin Luther King and the struggle against racial segregation and racism. Nowadays, people tend to volunteering.


Feb. 14th: Valentine's Day. (Both)
Everything in this date is pink or red. People celebrate this with presents, parties or dates. Also, you can give a cute present to your "valentine".


Feb. 20th: Presidents' Day. (USA)
George Washington and Abraham Lincoln are the most conmemmorated presidents. In the weeks or days leading up to the holiday, schools often organize events and lessons for students about the presidents of the United States.


Mar. 17th: St. Patrick's Day. (USA)
 Irish themed parties, drinks and food. Many people get into the spirit by dressing in green clothing and eating green colored food. Large street parades in some states.


Apr. 11th: Battle of Rivas. (Costa Rica)
They have parades in the province of Alajuela, in which was born Juan Santamaría who is the national hero of Costa Rica.


May 14th: Mother's Day. (USA)
In this day people prepare special meals and gifts to their mother, grandmother, wife, etc.


May 29th: Memorial's Day. (USA)
It is traditional to fly the flag of the United States at half staff from dawn until noon. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.


Jun 18th: Father's Day. (USA)
People prepare activities, meals and presents to their father, grandfather, etc.


Jul. 4th: Independence Day. (USA)
It is a day of family celebrations with picnics and barbecues, showing a great deal of emphasis on the American tradition of political freedom.Many people display the American flag outside their homes or buildings. Many communities arrange fireworks that are often accompanied by patriotic music.


July 25th: Anexation of Guanacaste. (Costa Rica)
In this day people conmemmorate the anexation of Guanacaste to Costa Rica, it is celebrated in the city with typical food, dances and parades.


Aug. 2nd: Our Lady of Los Angeles. (Costa Rica)
People walk from any part of the country to Cartago, it is a religious celebration, but many people do it because it is a tradition. The Basilica de los Angeles Church gives a special service on August 2nd.


Aug. 15th: Mother's Day. (Costa Rica)
It is celebrated in the same way as in USA.

Sep. 9th: Children's Day (Costa Rica)
Schools prepare activities for this day, children receive presents and have a day full of activities for them.


Sep. 15th: Idependence Day (Costa Rica)
In this day there are parades in every city of the country, also people use this day to attend to those activities and to spend time together.


Oct. 9th: Columbus Day. (USA)
To celebrate the anniversary of the discovery of their country with church services and other activities. In some towns and cities, special church services, parades and large events are held.


Oct. 12th: Day of the Cultures. (Costa Rica)
In this day there are cultural acts and children learn more about different cultures. This is a day that schools use to teach about this topic.


Oct. 31st: Halloween (USA)
Halloween is usually celebrated amongst family, friends and, sometimes, co-workers. However, some areas hold large community events.Many children dress up in fancy costumes and visit other homes in the neighborhood. At each house, they demand sweets, snacks or a small gift. If they do not get this, they threaten to do some harm to the inhabitants of the house. 



Nov. 10th: Veterans Day (USA)
It is to honor and thank all military personnel who served the United States in all wars, particularly living veterans. It is marked by parades and church services and in many places the American flag is hung at half mast.



Dec. 25th: Christmas Day. (Both)
People get together with their families and spend time with each other. They prepare big dinners and open presents at some point of the night.
